This new video from Google, of their computerized glasses (Google Glass, as they’re properly called) in use, is getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. It’s the first time we’ve seen some of the things the glasses will do — including helping you carve accurate renditions of tigers into blocks of ice, translate Chinese on the fly, search the web just by talking, attend birthday parties in absentia, and get terrifying first-person video of yourself flying on a trapeze.
These are, of course, extreme use cases. But it’s not hard to extrapolate from the video the ways Google glasses might be useful in your own life. They could make you a better tourist in foreign countries, allow you to pull up your shopping list with a voice command, and help you cheat at pub quiz night.
They will not, however, fill the existential void inside your heart. Maybe that’s coming in version 2.0.
