You think you’re hot today? Imagine spending hours operating a deep fryer in a cramped kitchen without air-conditioning. McDonald’s employees at the chain’s location on Broadway and 181st Street don’t have to imagine — their A/C is broken. Fed up and concerned about their health — one employee apparently fainted — they walked out on the job earlier today and are now picketing outside. Local pols and TV cameras are lovin’ it.
This isn’t an entirely novel situation for McDonald’s employees to find themselves in. In June, ten McDonald’s employees in Arizona were treated by firefighters after working for at least a week without air-conditioning. Three were sent to the hospital. The temperature inside the kitchen was 96 degrees.
