Brown University is giving the students who booed NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly off stage last week something new to complain about. In a letter released to the Brown community Wednesday, the university’s president, Christina Paxson, said that while “It is impossible not to empathize with our students who strongly object to stop-and-frisk policies and racial profiling,” the Brown Code of Student Conduct states that “protest becomes unacceptable when it obstructs the basic exchange of ideas.” Therefore, Paxson will appoint a committee of faculty and students to review what went wrong during the planning of the event, and whether the students involved should be punished. By the time the search for Kelly’s hecklers is complete, he’ll probably be long gone.
