Pedro Hernandez, the man who confessed to murdering 6-year-old Etan Patz in 1979 but later recanted, is scheduled to go on trail in April, but apparently the authorities are still pursuing other leads – even if they’re farfetched. A 30-year-old American living in Europe tells ProPublica that he was questioned by FBI agents last month who suggested that he might be Patz and his mother and father might not be his biological parents, though he’s eleven years younger than Patz would be today. “Obviously, I was surprised,” he said. “I chuckled. I thought it was funny because it was so unlikely that it would be possible that I could be this person. I had no idea who Etan Patz was … I thought it was a hoax.” Someone at the FBI saw the documentary The Imposter and started getting ideas.
