Last Thursday, Brian Williams reported on NBC Nightly News that “federal charges are now ruled out for Chris Christie in the affair that came to be known as ‘Bridgegate,’” and various NBC outlets published reports that cited anonymous officials saying they’d found no evidence that the governor knew about the George Washington Bridge lane closures. Christie said the new report “comes as no shock to me,” but it did surprise federal investigators, as the governor hasn’t been exonerated. A spokesowoman for U.S. attorney Paul Fishman told The Wall Street Journal that the investigation is “very much ongoing.” NBC has admitted its error, saying, “An unscripted line of our Nightly News report was imprecise and implied that a final decision had been reached.” Christie’s torrid relationship with MSNBC and its sister networks continues.
