After a weekend at home following her release from jail, Rowan County clerk Kim Davis returned to work. But before entering her office, she assured the public that she’ll be taking it easy for the foreseeable future.
Davis told reporters that she will continue to refuse to authorize marriage licenses to same-sex couples, though she insisted that she “will take no action” against deputy clerks who do so. She did encourage her deputies to take an immediate vacation, according to what her husband told the Washington Post.
“I’m here before you this morning with a seemingly impossible choice that I do not wish on any of my fellow Americans. My conscience or my freedom. My conscience or my ability to serve the people that I love. Obey God or a directive that forces me to disobey God, even when there are reasonable accommodations available,” said Davis. She went on to say that she had “grave doubts that licenses issued under these conditions are even valid” because they won’t bear her name.
Davis does appear to be following U.S. District Judge David Bunning’s order against interfering with her deputies’ issuing of marriage licenses — at least so far:
