Sacramento City College was on lockdown for several hours on Thursday afternoon after a gunman opened fire on three male students, killing one. The first victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the second was hospitalized in serious condition, and the third was only grazed. The suspect, described as a Pacific Islander wearing a white T-shirt and beige cargo shorts, was still at large on Thursday evening. It’s unclear if he’s affiliated with the school.

Rick Brewer, a spokesperson for the California community college, said the shooting took place around 4 p.m. in a parking lot next to the school’s baseball fields. “It started as a verbal dispute and escalated from there to fists, then to weapons,” Brewer said. “One young man pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his pocket and began shooting.”

Campus buildings were searched and evacuated one by one, and police gave the “all clear” around 7:45 p.m. The college said classes will resume on Friday. Student Lars Beesom told KCRA that the incident was “definitely really, really scary,” but everyone stayed calm. “It’s school,” he added. “It’s supposed to be a good environment, and you don’t want to be scared here.”
