Robert Lewis Dear was formally charged with first-degree murder at a hearing in Colorado Springs today; he is accused of killing three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic in late November. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, Dear had “at least 17 outburst during the hearing.” He yelled, “I am guilty. There will be no trial. I’m a warrior for the babies,” and, “You’ll never know the amount of blood I saw in that place,” according to CBS4. The Colorado Independent reports that he also yelled, “It’s my life.” The New York Times notes that when the judge discussed a publicity order, Dear said, “Could you add the babies that were supposed to be aborted that day? Could you add that to the list?”
Dear also said repeatedly that he did not trust his lawyer, public defender Daniel King, who also represented Aurora shooter James Holmes. A KOAA reporter heard him say, “My lawyer is in cahoots with Planned Parenthood to shut me up.”
Dear reportedly told police shortly after he was arrested last month, “No more baby parts.”
The next court date will be on December 23. According to the Gazette, “mental health concerns” will probably be addressed. “I cannot accept that Mr. Dear is competent as he sits here today,” King told the courtroom on Wednesday.
