In Southern Oregon on Friday, a cattle rancher and rodeo veteran jumped on his horse to pursue and lasso a bike theft suspect in the parking lot of a Walmart, according to the Medford Mail Tribune. Twenty-eight-year-old Robert Borba was loading his truck when he heard a woman scream that her bike was being stolen. Since he was also towing his horse in a trailer, he quickly got out his faithful steed and rode after the man. “I seen this fella trying to get up to speed on a bicycle. I wasn’t going to catch him on foot. I just don’t run very fast,” Borba later explained.
After the man had trouble operating the bike and tried to flee on foot, Borba caught up to him, “grabbed his rope and let it fly, lassoing the man around his legs and causing him to tumble to the ground, dragging him like roped cattle to the end of the parking lot.” Once Eagle Point police arrived, they arrested the 23-year-old man and charged him with misdemeanor theft. Borba said the suspect looked very surprised by the ordeal.
The rancher later pointed out that lassoing is just a part of his livelihood. “If [a rope] catches cattle pretty good, it catches a bandit pretty good,” he reasoned. One witness told KTVL news, “I mean, who gets on their horse at Walmart and chases after somebody and lassoes him other than the Lone Ranger?”
