America's pommel horse hero explains his ear-tug

NBC News

"This right here," says Stephen Nedoroscik, tugging his ear, "is for my dad’s father, my grandfather, my 'dziadziu' — that means grandfather in Polish."

Nedoroscik, whose pommel horse acrobatics helped America's male gymnasts to their first team medal since 2008, has been shown on camera tugging his ear at times. When the "TODAY" show caught up with him in Paris, he explained the significance.

Team USA's bronze-medal-winning gymnast told "TODAY" that his namesake grandfather, a World War II vet, passed away at age 94 last year.

"Back when I was at Penn State," he said, "that was the thing I did whenever I was on TV to say 'hey, dziadziu,' so I've kept the tradition up, and now it also means 'hey' to everyone I love."

Aggressive Serbians get to free throw line, sink U.S.

Reporting from Paris

Serbia outscored the foul-prone U.S., 4-0, from the free throw line, leading to the American setback to start 3x3 pool play.

“They just did a better job than us executing their game plan," said former Brigham Young star Jimmer Fredette, who was held to just 4 points in Serbia's 22-14 win. "We got into the foul count really early, they kept getting some easy baskets, and ... they were able to get to the free-throw line and get the ball back."

Fredette's comments came in a statement from USA Basketball. Paris 2024 officials canceled postgame news conferences because of an impending storm.

The Americans return to the outdoor court Thursday against Lithuania.
