Ryan McGinley’s Fosse Dreams

Ryan McGinley, photographic romanticizer of free and naked youth, wishes he could remake All That Jazz, Bob Fosse’s story of himself (starring Roy Scheider as hard-bitten Joe Gideon). “I feel an affinity with the character,” McGinley, still fresh-faced at 32, says. “There are lots of crossovers with the way he works and his work ethic and working with people dancing and trying to get your ideas across on a larger scale.” Making films—he recently directed a short for the fashion company Pringle of Scotland, starring Tilda Swinton—may be his next move. “Every project I’ve taken in the last few years is a step toward making an independent feature,” he says. In the meantime, there are the nude portraits of “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” his upcoming show at Team Gallery. It took him two years to edit down the (many thousands of) shots to just one per model—all young. “The time before you become jaded,” he explains, un-Gideon-ishly. “I feel like I’m capturing how a person is, but it’s really how I want them to be.”
