“What goes around comes around more annoying,” read the caption of a Bruce Eric Kaplan cartoon in the July 31 New Yorker, under a sketch of a cranky middle-aged couple wedged into a pair of armchairs. Last week, as if to prove the truism, the same cartoon – with the same caption – was accidentally reprinted. “I blame it entirely on low-level employees and high-level computers,” explains cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, who says a few sharp-eyed readers have called in asking about the double play. “But really, until I can pin the responsibility on someone else, it’s my mistake.” He says the error most likely occurred out of a combination of deadline pressure, the visual similarity of Kaplan’s drawings, and the difficulty in reading the captions in the mockup – “something I definitely need to look into fixing.” It’s happened once before, Mankoff admits, but “I won’t tell you when.” And, he adds, “I intend to make it another fun New Yorker tradition and run that cartoon in every issue.”
