If you love the sound of Franz Ferdinand but realize it’s time to move on, you might want to try the Rakes. The British quartet shares Franz’s enthusiasm for thumping electric bass lines, but their sound is mellower and less I’m-so-cool-you’ll-go-deaf. Produced by L.A.’s Dimmak Records (of Bloc Party and Blue States Lose fame), the Rakes’ first album, Capture/Release, is one of those rare compilations that works as party music or a soundtrack for your morning wakeup. My favorite tune is “Binary Love,” an intense dance track about math and emotion, but my club kid friends adore “Work Work Work,” an easygoing anthem for sleeping in.
