A perfectly toasted piece of bread, slathered with salted butter, is a beautiful thing. Getting that, however, can be much harder than it should be. Yours truly has tested many toasters over the years, and the winner, by a long baguette, is Breville’s Die-cast model (available in two- and four-slice versions). Your carb of choice is automatically lowered into the toasting cavity. There is a “lift and look” button for the impatient among us and an “a bit more” button for more time in the cooker. All that in a beautifully designed package that, admittedly, doesn’t come cheap. For toast lovers, it’s well worth the price.
