It’s rare that a clog is in the news, but so it is on this Friday late afternoon. Nancy Pelosi, fresh off her emergency hip-replacement surgery, arrived for the first day of the 119th Congress not in her signature heels but in what New York Times reporter Annie Karni referred to as “a shoe that looked vaguely orthopedic.” The Strategist’s middle name might as well be Vaguely Orthopedic, and, of course, we immediately ID’d these as Merrell Encore Ice 5’s, which designer Sandy Liang wrote a haiku about for us back in 2020:
Ode to these Merrells
How you hug my feet so sweet
Safe “Wonder Bread” shoes.
The navy ones are no longer available, but they come in this very similar “stonewash.”
