If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked Samantha Ronson of Ocean Park Standoff, whose single “If You Were Mine” (you can also see them on tour), about the Chanel eye patches, tea tree toothpicks, and cherry socks she can’t live without.
It’s how I quit smoking — or that’s not true. I went to a hypnotist and quit. But these toothpicks I learned about because an ex-boyfriend of mine a hundred years ago chewed them, so I started chewing them. They did help me quit smoking for six months, and then I actually started smoking again to get off the toothpicks — I must have a good, solid two pounds of splinters from these toothpicks in my system. They do keep me off smoking so I think it’s better than tar? It’s been four years now, which is mostly thanks to Kerry Gaynor, but the toothpicks are helpful, too. They taste like tea tree, and there are actually cinnamon versions, but apparently I’m allergic to cinnamon, which I wish I’d discovered before I bought all those cinnamon chewing sticks.
These drops are like a serum with this whole science to them that I should know, but I just think they help cut through the smog and disgusting shit in the air when you’re traveling. Dr. Sturm is this German doctor, and I use the blood cream she makes from your own plasma, too. But the anti-pollution drops are the best in the morning and at night after I wash my face. It’s not greasy and it’s not super shiny — she has these other Glow drops for that — but it feels just a tiny bit sticky when you put it on, like it’s shielding you from the grime. It’s a nice force field between your skin and the shit in the world. Cause I live in L.A.
Mothers are always buying you socks, and you’re like, “I’m good,” right? Well, growing up in my household, there were five of us, and I never got a whole pair of socks. So after I became a grown-up, I became very serious about my socks. Even when I lived with Charlotte, we’d do our laundry separately because I could not lose my socks. It’s become something of a running joke in our family, so my mother started getting me these really cute socks from Happy Socks because my stepfather lives above the store on West Broadway. And if I’m going to wear socks, why not fun ones. My mother got me these really great cherry ones recently, which I love.
I was at Joe’s Pizza the other day, and I saw the Mexican Fanta in the glass bottle, and I was like, “Oh my god, I forgot how much I love it.” Everything tastes better in the glass bottle, like the Mexican Coke. I think it makes it sweeter. I know that’s not true, but it seems like it. It also just looks so good.
My friend Rashida Jones did a collaboration with them a little while ago, and even though I’m always out of town, I happened to be around for her event. So I went to her thing to support my friend, but the suitcases are actually dope. They have chargers in them, and seeing as someone in the band is always forgetting a charger or whatever, it comes in handy. Rashida made this purple-ish one that I have, and you can always tell which ones are hers. I was on the plane the other day, and I saw the purple suitcase, and I thought, “I must know that person with that Rashida suitcase,” but I didn’t. It was Ava DuVernay.
I mean, this is so superficial. I don’t know that much about beauty stuff, but my girlfriend does [Editor’s note: Ronson is dating Violet Grey founder Cassandra Grey] so I’ve been learning about it. Chanel’s branding is just insane, so if you’re going to look like an idiot wearing eye patches, wear Chanel. I’ll put them on while watching TV in bed. The other day I had just gotten back from a red-eye and playing shows on tour and put them on immediately. I have to do it because it all shows a little more and hurts a little more these days.
So Nick is this hatmaker who has a shop in Venice near where I used to live. He makes these great one-of-a-kind hats to order, and they are just dope. He actually used to make fun of me because I liked hats that were a bit smaller like fedoras, and he said I was stingy with my brims. He basically shamed me into large brim hats. But if you go to his store, the hats are fully customizable, so I have some with feathers and with my initials. They’re so chill and pretty magical.
The red, black, and white sneakers are just the best ever. I definitely know more about Jordan shoe designs than Jordan basketball playing, but these are so dope even if I generally keep it pretty classic with my sneakers. I’m usually very particular, but I got these as a Christmas present from my girlfriend and was so surprised. She gave me the gift, and as I was about to unwrap it, I thought, “I’m going to have to pretend I like these,” but then I opened them and was like, “Oh shit! What do you know about these?!”
Before I got my AmEx, I actually wanted the green one, because it was so ’80s and I love that, but I was told to get the platinum because the perks on it are just so much better. And it’s really true. We’re always flying coach, but the Centurion lounge is the best because they let you bring in two extra people (and there are only three of us in the band), and the lounges have free Wifi and really good food and chargers and TVs and whatever else — plus, TSA Pre-Check is covered when you apply for it, which makes so much sense. I can even use the points I earn on Amazon, which makes it feel like the dumb shit I buy is free. In fact, I just bought Happy Socks the other day.
