The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

See the Sophisticated Side of Athens

4. Insider’s Tip

Get back to nature at record label Orange Twin's bucolic commune.

Commune with creative locals and musicians at Orange Twin, an artist co-op backed by the folks behind the Athens-based independent record label of the same name (their roster includes indie faves like Neutral Milk Hotel). The property, about ten minutes north of downtown, is an ecofriendly oasis encompassing a former Girl Scouts summer camp, a swimming hole, vegetable gardens, vineyards, and sundry goats and chickens. At least once a year, the property hosts a concert in the former Girl Scouts amphitheater that’s open to the public; this year’s show, scheduled for May, will feature label artists Elephant 6. For a full-on immersion into the friendly, farm-centric vibe, book an overnight stay in the private guest room of the main house, which is shared with resident artists and musicians. Official tours aren’t offered, but residents are happy to set up a casual visit if you email ahead of time to make arrangements.
