The water's warm, so take a dip at the Lambert's Cove beach, open to the public in the fall.

When summer crowds have gone is actually the most ideal time to sample the Vineyard’s beaches; water temperatures hit their annual highs in September70 degrees, balmy by New England standardsand several beaches that are normally resident-only become open to all comers. Locals tend to flock to clay-cliff-lined Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark for its great breaks (and a glimpse of the nude beach on site) or seek out a quiet stretch of sand at Lamberts Cove in West Tisbury, both of which don’t require permits in the fall.
