The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

Coast Into the Creative Scene of Portsmouth

4. Insider’s Tip

Despite its idyllic seaboard location, Portsmouth offers plenty in the realm of contemporary art, like at the currently expanding 3S Artspace.

The city may be centuries old, but Portsmouth has become an incubator for contemporary art. The Portsmouth Museum of Art, which opened in 2009, is actually dedicated to all things cutting-edge, specializing exclusively in contemporary 21st-century art, and even the space itself is brand-new: The museum is currently moving into a converted industrial mill in the West End neighborhood. Though an official opening date hasn’t yet been set, keep an eye on its events page to learn about one-off installations. The three-year-old 3S Artspace is also undergoing a massive overhaul of its 20,000-square-foot facilities, with plans to reopen by the end of the year with a new gallery, a performance stage, artists’ studios, and a restaurant; check out their Facebook page for events on offer during construction. For alternative art spaces across Portsmouth, check out Art 'Round Town to create your own walking tour of the city’s nine participating galleries.
