The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

Skip the Slopes at Vail and Beaver Creek

5. Oddball Day

Alleviate sore muscles in the thermal pools of Allegria Spa.

Take a day to unwind and pamper yourself in tranquil Beaver Creek. Prepare for a day of body-and-soul indulgence with an organic bagel (Snickers flavor, anyone?) ($.99) or a gluten-free blueberry muffin ($2.49) at the Avon Bakery and Deli, in town at the base of Beaver Creek. Then head up the mountain to Beaver Creek Village. Check in for the morning at the 30,000-square-foot Allegria Spa. Splash around in the soothing water sanctuary, inspired by ancient Roman bathing rituals and complete with a thermae (jetted pool), caldarium steam room, and tepidarium (relaxation room) (included with a treatment). Dry off and try one of the spa’s many luxurious treatments: the Colorado wild rose cure includes a rose-and-wildflower body scrub, lavender oil bath, and full-body massage with rose-geranium butter ($350); while an alpine thermal wrap and massage gets at any sore joints or muscles you’ve picked up, using hot stones and heated herbs ($235). Once you’ve blissed out, fuel up at the Golden Eagle Inn, where the game burger, made from elk, venison, wild boar, antelope, and buffalo ($16) crams all your lean Colorado meats in one bun. But don’t linger: At 12:30 p.m., you’re being picked up for a two-hour mushing tour ($175), gliding through thick forests just ten miles from Beaver Creek behind a team of huskies. Back at Beaver Creek, stroll through the shops offering more than standard ski-town fare, like Gorsuch Home, which sells stylish gifts like beautifully boxed Lafco candles in scents like the sage-and-wood ($60), an antler-handled cheese knife ($30), or sheepskin throw pillows ($568). From there, head to happy hour at Vin 48, where small plates like warm goat-cheese with orange-truffle vinaigrette and roasted beets are just $8. Then get dinner at Splendido, where dishes like succulent Spanish octopus salad with Greek yogurt ($18) and a buffalo strip loin ($44) feel like the perfect healthy-yet-refined way to end the day.
