It's not unusual to catch a camera crew in the town nicknamed "Wilmywood."

So many television shows and movies have been filmed in Wilmington’s studios and on its scenic streets that the town has earned the nicknames Hollywood East and Wilmywood (the surprisingly long list includes Empire Records, Cape Fear, Blue Velvet, Weekend at Bernie’s, and, most recently, the ongoing Stephen King sci-fi drama Under the Dome). The 90-minute Hollywood NC Location Walk ($13) focuses especially on teen dramas Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill, which filmed in these parts for six and nine seasons, respectively. EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest studio complex outside of California, recently opened up its ten stages for weekend tours in the spring ($12), which include a behind-the-scenes look at the set of Under the Dome. If you want the inside scoop on real-time filming news, the Wilmywood Daily blog will keep you up to date on which celebrities are in town for filming and when and where you can catch them shooting scenes.
