Caroline De Sousa & Zak Mascolo

Caroline De Sousa, 27, and Zak Mascolo, 38, met while working at a Toni & Guy hair salon in 2002. (They’re now the brand’s fashion director and creative director, respectively.) “I had dated weirdos in New York for five years,” says Caroline. “When you finally meet someone sane, you know he’s the one.” The couple had a child together, Fabiana, and Caroline was five months pregnant with their second (Gaetano, now 1) when Zak proposed. “He flew my mother in from Brazil and his mother from England,” she recalls, “and walked into the house with one on each arm, then got on his knee.” Following their Botanic nuptials (Fabiana was the flower girl, and Gaetano, the ring bearer), their guests walked to the Brooklyn Museum for a “John Derian–meets–Alice in Wonderland”–style reception, where the newlyweds swayed to “Baby, I’m Yours” by the Arctic Monkeys for their first dance. Afterward, the guests launched an epic dance-off. “A hairdresser, my Brazilian sister, and my 5-year-old daughter were all doing the Dougie,” says Caroline, laughing.

The Details

Caterer: Restaurant Associates

“I bought dress shoes for Gaetano, but he looked like a little old man; we swapped them for Converse. Fabiana wore a Philip Lim dress, blue shoes from Crewcuts, and a fascinator from Anthropologie. And she was really adamant about wearing lace gloves.” Photo: Brian Dorsey Studios

“The table settings were a conversation piece. I’m not a flower kind of girl, so we used terrariums, branches, and succulents, plus a few whimsical touches like a gold bunny in a glass vase and Fornasetti dishes.” Photo: Brian Dorsey Studios

“The concept of everyone wearing the same dress wouldn’t have been appropriate for my bridesmaids; they’re just so different. They wore everything from Vera Wang to Jill Stuart, but somehow all ended up with pleating in their dresses. It was great to see everyone so comfortable.” Photo: Brian Dorsey Studios

“I tried on something like 60 dresses but fell in love with this one by Selia Yang. The color had a vintage, antique feel. Zak knew from day one that he would have a bespoke suit”very British of him.” Photo: Brian Dorsey Studios
