When it comes to packing, most people fall into one of two camps: You can either pack things neatly, with everything in the perfect place like you’re some sort of Marie Kondo apprentice, or you just stuff it all in and figure it out when you get there. If you’re in the latter group, we have a solution: packing cubes. According to Strategist contributor Foster Kamer, these little zippered bags are “the Russian nesting doll of luggage.”
They’re deceptively simple and extremely useful, “installing brilliant, Draconian order and organization where there was once only chaos,” Kamer says. “Packing cubes permanently reconfigure for accuracy the notion of what fits into your luggage by having your bag’s contents laid out neatly in front of you before you throw them in your luggage.” This particular set includes three cubes — a large one, which Kamer uses for shirts, pants, and shorts; a medium one for underwear and socks; and a small one that he says he still hasn’t quite mastered. (We recommend using that one for the things you need frequently and want to get to quickly, like PJs or all the new bathing suits you bought for the beach.) These cubes won’t make packing the most fun part of vacation, but they will make it a whole lot easier.
