As part of its celebration of Black History Month, Target has released a small collection of bedding, apparel, and stationery designed by the legendary quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. (This collaboration was created through a partnership with Nest, a nonprofit that supports the economic empowerment of artisans and makers.) Known for their intricate patchwork quilts, the artisans continue to craft their pieces using traditional methods dating back to the 19th century, and many of their quilts reside in the permanent collections of the Met and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. A few quilters sell original works on Etsy, but now you can buy throw blankets and cushions at Target that you can actually use instead of displaying as artwork or keeping as an heirloom. Below, a few of my favorites, which are all currently in stock but won’t be for long.
This cotton-linen throw blanket was designed by third-generation quilter Delia Thibodeaux.
Caster Pettway designed this black-and-white pillow that reverses to a deep cherry red.
Thibodeaux is also behind this quilted tote that comes in a very nice forest-green base.
After you’ve used up the included journal, you can refill the quilted cover with a notebook of your own.
And finally, you can sport this Thibodeaux-designed quilted jacket made from a recycled cotton blend that would be perfect for spring.
