If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso — who’s currently on tour for her album No Rules Sandy — about the sneakers she owns in more than 20 styles, the “heavenly” butter she bakes with, and the trampoline she brings on the road.
I love the Switch for touring. I use it every day. When we wrote our latest record, No Rules Sandy, Nick Sanborn and I would take breaks by playing Hades. It’s the most beautiful game. Right now, the whole crew and I are really into the Mario sports section, especially Mario golf. It’s so fun. And I’m also replaying Zelda for nostalgia.
Oh my gosh, I love this woman. She’s my absolute favorite. She’s made me two phone cases. Each case costs like a hundred bucks, which seems like a lot, but to me, it’s worth it. When you order one, she will email you and ask, “Are there any particular creatures you want on your phone?” Last time, I asked for a dragon, and she found five different dragons for me that she just sent in a little bag when she sent me the case. She also put a game controller on it, lots of cute mermaids and seashells, shiny hearts, and a tiny croissant. It’s also incredibly entertaining for everyone. It makes me friends everywhere I go.
I have to have sunscreen at all times. If I don’t, I get sunburnt easily. This is the perfect size and fits in my bag, so I carry it with me. And they just made it reef-safe, which I was waiting for them to do for a while. I call it “science sunscreen” because it melts into your face in a really weird way that usually shocks people I share it with.
This is my brand-new robe. The Block Shop did a good job with advertising because I saw that they gave Jenny Slate one for the Marcel the Shell campaign, and I ended up buying myself one. I love it. It’s linen. It makes me look fancy as hell, but I can hang out in it and most people just think it’s a dress. I’m working on buying more comfortable clothes, particularly because I only play in leotards right now. When I’ve been in leotards for three hours, I just want to wear pajamas. So this robe is really contributing to my quality of life.
This smells incredibly good, like your cool hippie aunt’s bathroom. Like it has that California energy where you’re like, What even is this heavenly smell? It’s a little citrusy and woodsy and dank, almost like a forest floor but light and bright. I know this is weird, but I really like the fact that you could eat it. Like if you accidentally ate it, it’s not gonna hurt you, which is nice to know. It doesn’t foam too much. It just feels really refreshing. My skin feels moisturized and dewy after using it but never sticky, which happens with other cleansers. Also, honestly, I’m usually taken in by the packaging of facial cleansers, and this one is just so beautiful.
I’m always keeping an eye out for a good reusable mug and stumbled upon this. I just think it’s pretty. But it’s also actually versatile since it’s good for both hot and cold drinks. Most of my other water bottles only work for cold things, and I’ve used this for soup before and it’s kept it warm. I usually use this for coffee in the morning and have a preshow drink in it. It’s also no spill. I haven’t spilled anything in it yet, and I’m great at spilling things.
These are my absolute favorite sneakers. I got my first pair when I was 12 because of the Spice Girls. I wore through them in, like, a year. Then I couldn’t find them because I was in the States and had been dreaming about them for years. When Sylvan Esso started in 2012, I realized I wanted to perform in them, so I found an incredible shoe website — solestruck.com, which is no longer with us — and they had somehow tapped into the motherload of Buffalo sneakers. I now have more than 20 different pairs of mostly the bigger versions: a pair with Smarties on them, another leopard-print pair, and another with beautiful gold chains. For a while, I wore the taller ones, but now I only wear the two-inch ones. I like the silhouette more, and they transition to a day shoe really easily. I usually wear the black or white vinyl ones. They’ve gotten hip, which is annoying because they’re more expensive now, but I love them.
I have DD’s and it’s quite hard to find a bra I feel comfortable performing in. This shit is revolutionary. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to wear a bra again. Now I can just use tape, and it’s the best. It never moves. This is showing how much of a true dirtbag I am, but sometimes I don’t shower after a show if we have to leave pretty fast. And one time, I didn’t take my boob tape off and went swimming in it the next day in Seattle, and it didn’t fall off. It does come off in the shower with soap and water, though. You can also cover yourself in oil to get it off, which I thought was the only way to do it for a while. That was very strange, but now that I’ve figured out that soap and water work, I’d highly recommend it.
I bought this during the pandemic, and it’s been really saving my ass ever since. This trampoline folds in half, which I needed so I could take it on planes. I have mine set up in my hotel room next to me right now. I do the LEKFIT workouts sometimes on tour. It’s perfect for cardio and doesn’t hurt my knees. It’s also great when I’m stressed out or just want to dance around.
Bjorn Qorn is my favorite snack in the whole wide world. I’m completely addicted to it at this point. It’s perfectly seasoned. And while I love the original, the spicy version is very good too. Actually, all the flavors are great. It’s on my rider, so I make sure to have it on tour with me, and the whole crew is into it now. They also just introduced a version you can pop in a microwave, which is so exciting.
This is my absolute favorite butter in the world. I discovered it because my friend Christian, who runs a wine bar called Lolo, got it for their bread and butter. It’s the perfect snack. I’ve also been baking with it this summer, and it’s truly excellent. It has a very distinct flavor — it’s basically cheese — and it’s heavenly.
