Skin care
Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint is our favorite tinted moisturizer slash serum, because it blurs imperfections, is lightweight and is packed with skin loving ingredients. It contains squalane, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid for hydrating, and mineral SPF 40 for sun protection.
This longtime favorite facial mist is soothing, moisturizing, and fragrance free, making it perfect for sensitive skin. (It even has the seal of approval from the National Eczema Association.)
Our beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton says Tata Harper’s resurfacing mask is “gentle yet wildly helpful at combating any kind of dark spots or overall dullness on your skin.” She recommends using it to brighten and soften skin before makeup or as a treatment after particularly sweaty days.
An actually good tinted mineral sunscreen is hard to come by, but freelancer Mbiye Kasonga says this RMS SPF does the job. After applying, it deepens “into a brown color with a slight shimmer that left my face dewy and radiant,” she says.
This is our favorite sustainable body wash for a couple of reasons: Its packaging is made from 100 percent pre-existing recycled materials, it has a biodegradable formula, and it still feels luxurious. Our senior editor Simone Kitchens has been using it for five years and it’s hydrating thanks to the minimal yet high-quality ingredients list, which includes glycerin, aloe vera, and shea butter.
Osea’s body scrub is made with shea butter and safflower oil to lock in moisture, plus three types of salt exfoliants (sourced from New Zealand, the Himalayas, and Hawaii). Beauty writer Brenley Goertzen says it delicately exfoliates and leaves her skin extra silky.
Beauty writer Kitty Guo’s a fan of Necessaire’s fragrance-free body lotion for its rich, creamy texture that soaks in quickly. It also has skin-brightening and toning ingredients to help even out skin over time.
For a non-greasy, fast-absorbing body oil, look no further than Osea’s formula. Goertzen says it leaves her skin feeling bright and bouncy all day long and overtime has helped with her keratosis pilaris on her arms.
This do-everything formula works on the body, hair, cuticles, and for shaving, which is why it’s our favorite multipurpose body oil. It’s lightweight, highly absorbent, and is said to have an earthy scent, thanks to its notes of lavender, geranium, sage, and palo santo.
Ursa Major’s natural deodorant is non-gritty, moisture-absorbing, and pleasantly clean-smelling. “No matter what the weather’s like or how crazy my day gets, the Hoppin’ Fresh deodorant gets the job done without screaming dirty hippie,” Jacqueline Jones, natural-beauty writer at the Beauty Proof, has told us.
Makeup
This lightweight, creamy concealer provides medium coverage and “buffs seamlessly into the skin,” according to our beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton. It’s part of her go-to summer makeup routine but can also work for anyone who prefers a more natural look.
Kosas’s hydrating concealer is well suited for dry skin, since it’s infused with hyaluronic acid and pink-algae extract. After going through a tube myself, it’s become a staple in my own routine. The foolproof formula looks just as good if I’m applying with a beauty blender or my fingers in a rush.
Another Kosas favorite of mine is their setting and smoothing powder. It smooths out my texture and feels like I’m barely wearing any product. And it surprisingly lays well on my dry patches, despite being a powder formula.
Ilia’s multi-stick gives you a sheer wash of color on your eyes, lips, and cheeks. Plus, it’s formulated with shea butter and avocado oil for extra hydration.
The brand also makes our favorite mascara for sensitive eyes, because it’s made with conditioning beeswax and nourishing shea butter. And unlike other clean-beauty mascaras, this one is buildable, lengthening, and smudge proof.
This has been my favorite lip gloss going on two years now. It’s never sticky nor irritating for my sensitive lips.
Hair care
When I was dealing with scalp issues last year (flakiness and itchiness), Necessaire’s shampoo was one product that didn’t cause irritation. I attribute that to its high-quality formula, which includes hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol, aloe-vera leaf juice, and celery-seed extract.
I paired the above with the brand’s conditioner, which left my hair feeling hydrated, full, and silky smooth.
Sienna Naturals makes a shampoo so hydrating that our beauty writer Tembe Denton-Hurst uses it to detangle her curls conditioner free. Plus, they gave her curls definition that “clumped and spiraled so nicely I was compelled to post a photo on Instagram Stories as proof of its effectiveness.”
Kitchen and dining writer Emma Wartzman likes Ceremonia’s rescue spray so much that she bought her second bottle this August. The multitasking product detangles and smoothes out her ultrafine curly hair and protects from heat, too.
Fragrance
If you like woody scents, multiple celebrities have told us they can’t live without this Maison Louis Marie fragrance. Maria Sharapova, one said celebrity, says it “doesn’t feel like it came produced. It just feels very natural to wear.”
For a brighter fragrance, Henry Rose’s Windows Down has notes of grapefruit, neroli, orange flower, and musk. Freelancer Erica Cerulo says the nostalgic scent is akin to Gap Dream, a flowery non-fussy fragrance released in 1995.
Viera-Newton took the plunge on DedCool’s Juniper Sandalwood fragrance while window shopping on Garmentory. “I almost always get complimented on it when I wear it out — and I’ve found that it actually smells better after a few hours when it’s fully absorbed into your skin,” she says.
If you have one too many empty candle vessels lying around, consider Siblings’s candle kits. When Strategist writer Dominique Pariso tested it herself, she said it was “probably the least labor-intensive DIY project I’ve ever done.”
