A Peek Inside the Strategist’s Annual Secret Santa Exchange

Photo-Illustration: The Strategist; Photos: Retailers

Every year, a few weeks before Christmas, the Strategist team gathers for a Secret Santa exchange. We draw names before Thanksgiving so everyone has plenty of time to shop (and can take advantage of the Black Friday sales). We set the deadline. The only rule: The gift has to be under $25, including shipping.

Then, we gather to open our gifts and try to guess who our Secret Santa is. As you can imagine, this gift exchange between a few dozen of the most excellent and thoughtful gift givers is routinely one of the best team gatherings we have each year. The gifts we’ve found for each other are so extremely specific and well-suited to their recipients that even we are surprised by one another’s selections. We’ve said for years that we should share this delightful annual exchange with our readers — and now we finally are. Welcome to the Strategist’s 2024 Secret Santa. We hope it inspires any last-minute gift shopping you have left on your list. But if it doesn’t, we have hundreds more gift ideas.

Simone Kitchens, senior editor

Recipient: Crystal Martin

Crystal bakes a lot, so I knew I wanted to get her something in that world. I figured she already has a pretty good utensil setup, so I texted another baker friend for ideas on a useful but not-obvious tool. She suggested a wooden oven pull, a genius thing I had never heard of — one end has a hook and the other has a ridge for safely pulling and pushing hot oven racks. Etsy has a trove of handmade ones. I picked out an oak one from this shop.

Recipient: Sam Daly

I bought three pair of these in black, gray, and white (they were on sale). I saw Sam liked them in one of our Hauls, and she’d said she’d like a few more pairs. So I thought, Why not?

I always like to gift splurge-y staples when I can. So I got Simone this luxurious Clarins hand cream after I spotted it on sale during Black Friday. I first read about it in a Strategist Haul earlier this year — senior editor Hilary Reid, noted purveyor of tasteful goods, had highly recommended it. She wrote “best hand cream ever!!!” in the chat when Simone opened her gift, so seems the sentiment still stands! Hopefully it’ll provide a nice everyday indulgence, and help with one of the worst parts of winter: dry hands!

Ailbhe Malone, senior editor

Recipient: Kelsie Schrader

Kelsie makes my life better by being extremely organized. So, I wanted to make her life better with something extremely frivolous. (If you’ve ever read her Strategist Hauls you will see that she very much considers every purchase. Like these pants — which she eyeballed for five months before buying). I was close to adding this Brooklyn Museum water bottle to cart but thought it was still too practical. So, I went with these Memphis-y Bodum wineglasses — a 1983 reissue. Good and silly (but still slightly useful).

Recipient: Amelia Jerden

I was so torn on Amelia’s gift! Among the things I considered: something from an Asheville-based business to support the town post-hurricane (Amelia lives in North Carolina); a Snoopy hat (she’s fawned over Peanuts collabs and hats in Slack and Strategist Hauls many times); Chappell Roan merch. But in the end, I went with these pasta-shaped pot holders that she dropped in one of our Slack channels months ago, commenting that they’re “very cute.” She’s actually dropped several pasta-related products in Slack (including this hat that was sadly out of budget), so I had a sense that pasta merch would be well-received. And it was! She’s already sent a picture of them in her kitchen drawer, lying in wait.

Recipient: Bella Druckman

I’ve been obsessed with Colette Bernard’s claw clips for awhile, after seeing her collection of career-themed hair claws on TikTok a year or so ago. The career claws popped into my mind while I was brainstorming gifts for my recipient, Bella Druckman, and while I was browsing Bernard’s website to see if there was a writerly claw clip, I saw this Barbie-esque “B” clip and thought it felt like something Bella would like — or at least be able to use, since she has long hair.

Recipient: Kathy Li

I love giving multiple gifts, so I combined some Slack sleuthing and Black Friday discounts to come up with this duo for Kathy Li, our social-media editor. She had previously mentioned that she likes this press-on-nail brand, so I selected the beige and white set to add to her supply. To finish off the gift, I picked out one of my current favorite food-storage containers since she had recently mentioned swapping out her plastic food-storage containers for glass ones. This one is surprisingly chic, leakproof, and dishwasher- and microwave-safe, so I thought it’d be a nice addition to her new collection.

Recipient: Kitty Guo

I saw that Kitty wrote about these Portuguese egg tarts in her Strategist Brain, but I didn’t want to get her anything perishable since I was mailing the gift. So I thought, What goes well with pastries? Jam! This Bonne Maman set lets her try a bunch of different flavors, and the jars will be cute to have around once she finishes them. As my colleague Dominique pointed out, you could also use them as shot glasses.

Recipient: Arielle Avila

Arielle and I once ran into each other at Mister Sunday, an all-day dance party founded by DJs Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter. She recently moved to Texas and said that she’d been missing the music and rave scene in New York, so I sent her these vinyl records produced by Harkin and Carter’s record label, Mister Saturday Night. It’s a compilation of tracks from electronic artists who’ve played the party, so I figured she could throw it on whenever she was feeling nostalgic for Nowadays.

Recipient: Tembe Denton-Hurst

I know Tembe’s a voracious reader (and I’m a big fan of her literary Substack), so I wanted to stock her with note-taking and bookmarking essentials. She also mentioned the Hooga book light (a longtime Strategist favorite) as a good stocking stuffer, so I added that in, just in case she ever needs a backup.

Recipient: Lauren Ro

I had Lauren, who I know likes to read, so I gifted her My Lesbian Novel, by Renee Gladman. We’d chatted about Miranda July’s buzzy All Fours a few weeks prior and I felt that this book had some similarities (an auto-fictional main character mostly) but without feeling like a repeat. It’s about a woman trying to write a romance novel that ends up being about writing, the self, and, of course, love. The cover is stunning, too, which doesn’t hurt.

Recipient: Jen Trolio

Jen has mentioned BonBon several times in the Strat Slack, and as a gummy-candy obsessive myself, I knew she would appreciate receiving candies in the mail. I chose a mix of sweet, sour, and black licorice in a pretty gift box. Shipping took a while, but I’m excited to visit the store someday soon.

Jen Trolio, senior editor

Recipient: Ashley Wolfgang

I was shopping the MoMA Design Store website — a favorite place to browse — and added a few different options to my cart, including this velvet shell-shaped jewelry box in lavender, the Strategist favorite desk toy the Hoptimist, and one of Baggu’s mini bag charms. But when I learned that Ashley had recently gotten engaged, it sealed the deal for the shell. I simply got lucky that lavender turns out to be one of Ashley’s favorite colors.

Recipient: Brenley Goertzen

I got Brenley two charms of her initials from a Toronto-based jewelry store, Armed, she mentioned in her latest Strategist Brain. I had to pivot from my initial ideas, due to postal workers on strike in Canada causing shipping delays, so I had to get a little creative; luckily, I was able to call the store so Brenley could go pick up the gift herself right in her neighborhood.

Recipient: Erin Schwartz

I knew Erin, who is our resident home-DIY expert, is a fan of the silver and chrome décor that’s been popping up everywhere recently. And after going through a long list of DIY gadgets, I finally landed on this magnetic-parts tray that’s both functional and makes for a nice-looking catchall.

Erin has a large pegboard covering one wall in their kitchen, so I searched for a new accessory that might be useful (and that they wouldn’t already have). I stumbled across this tape and ribbon organizer and decided it was perfect. It’s 12 inches long, so I can imagine it holding lots of cylindrical items, from tape spools to wine bottles and even mugs.

Recipient: Jeremy Rellosa

I almost had too many ideas for Jeremy — he recently completed the New York Marathon and hikes, bikes, and does a ton of outdoorsy activities, all of which are great inspiration. But the thing that sparked an idea was his inclusion of a Josh Hart jersey in the Things Strategist Editors Want article. I started looking for Knicks gifts and became obsessed with the idea of a basketball planter, but everything I found on Etsy was over the $25 limit. But I figured I could probably DIY it — so I bought a $9 mini Knicks basketball from Wilson, $8 worth of river rocks (not exactly these, but similar), and supplied a snake plant I had at home. I am happy to say Jeremy loved it.

Recipient: Ambar Pardilla

I was reading a recent Strategist Haul article and saw that Ambar loves Pocky. I also know she’s into jewelry, based on her beat. I figured I could get her a big shipment of Pocky, but I thought a little Pocky-themed charm would make a longer-lasting gift as opposed to just a restock!

Recipient: Winnie Yang

I drew our editor Winnie Yang for our Strategist Secret Santa. Winnie created our Strategist gifting Slack channel (it’s what you think it is, just us sending links to gifts we’re thinking about), and when she excitedly mentioned Donostia Foods as her “favorite tinned-fish people” a few weeks ago, the proverbial lightbulb went off in my head. I asked her what she recommended getting from the online store (“for my dad,” a terrible lie!) and she said clams and cockles. I thought she could always use some more — or keep the tins in her pantry for a while. And turns out, she ran out not too long ago.

Recipient: Hilary Reid

I had fortuitously planned a short vacation in Lisbon in November — perfect timing for Secret Santa shopping. A Vida Portuguesa is a wonderful place to look for gifts and souvenirs, and I found a few items there that I thought Hilary might like. I looked first for soap, since I read in a Strategist Haul that she had recently moved to an apartment with a bathtub.

And I got a cork soap dish at AVP’s sister store, Depozito. (Portugal is the leading producer of cork products, and you can find so many cork things there. Also, cork is a very cool material with lots of interesting properties.)

And lastly, I got an Emílio Braga notebook. The exact one I got isn’t listed online, but there are similar ones here.

Hilary Reid, senior editor

Recipient: Liza Corsillo

I got these subtly groovy Hansel from Basel socks for Liza because their colors and earthy sportiness reminded me of her. Liza is someone who often has fun but still practical socks peeking out from her boots, and so these felt like the right fit — plus, a pair of pricey socks is something I don’t think most people are buying themselves that often, so these seemed like a good treat.

Liza Corsillo, senior writer

Recipient: Emma Wartzman

I gave Emma the Jellycat egg and fruit sticky notes. Because she’s the food and kitchen writer, I wanted something food-themed but not actually food. I got her the egg because she wrote about egg poachers, and the fruit stickies because I wanted them myself.

Recipient: Dominique Pariso

Winnie posted in Slack a while back saying that she loves Donostia’s tinned and jarred fish. Dom responded something like, “I want this.” It stuck in my mind because I also chimed in, “Same.” Anyway, no-brainer gift. I went with anchovies, ’cause they’re so versatile, and the sardines in a spicy sauce, destined for a perfect piece of toast (IMO). The brand also threw in a very cute tote bag (a surprise to me, too) after seeing it was a Secret Santa gift from my gift note.

Dominique Pariso, writer

Recipient: Ailbhe Malone

When Ailbhe and I were working on Ask the Strategist: Gifting Edition, she mentioned how she was thinking of gifting the Hoptimist during our Secret Santa but ended up going with a different idea. A good gifting rule of thumb: Sometimes people want the thing they give to others. So I sent this little green guy off to London. Ailbhe’s review? “He’s so hefty, a quality guy.”
