What Sutton Foster Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked actress and Broadway star Sutton Foster, who just debuted a new season of Younger, about the serum, markers, and sound machine she can’t live without.

My husband snores a little bit, so I started wearing ear plugs. They’re great. I’ve tried every brand and these are my favorite. Now, I use them when I fly because I’m not the best flyer, but I do better when I can’t hear all the engines and the noise. I just put them on and I’m good to go.

My first apartment was a block away from a fire station and a police department, so there were always sirens up and down our block. That’s when I first started using a sound machine. We also have a house outside the city, but it gets too quiet there, so I also needed a sound machine to create a consistent noise. The first time I ever got one was like 20 years ago. One of my first boyfriends had one and I was like, What is this? And then I became absolutely addicted to his so I just ended up buying my own. I can at least thank him for that. One good thing.

My aunt taught me how to knit when I was nine or ten, and then in my late teens, early twenties I actually taught myself how to crochet. It’s something that has always been a part of my life. But then with the birth of my daughter, I started making baby blankets and clothes. I even made some stuffed animals. She definitely inspired me to expand my repertoire of what I can make. I have a little bag full of all my crochet needles that travels with me everywhere. I never know when I’m going to grab some yarn and work on a project.

This is one of my favorite go-to yarns. They have amazing options. I just find myself always gravitating toward their products. It’s also a family-owned company that’s been around for over 100 years I feel like. All of the sweaters that I’ve been making for my daughter lately have been made out of Lion Brand yarn.

I love that this is a brightening formula but it goes on smooth like an oil. I feel like it’s like little vitamins for my skin. I try to take as best care of my skin as possible. I say a smile can take ten years off your face, so the true magic comes from within, but any kind of help you can get is good. I’ve been using every day over the course of doing Younger, so for the last five years.

I feel like I have 20 tubes of lip balm; there’s one in every pocket. I have different ones for different needs. On a daily basis, I’m a fan of Burt’s Bees and it doesn’t matter what flavor. I guess if I had to pick I would go for grapefruit. But then, if it’s winter and my lips are really chapped, there’s the Aquaphor lip ointment, which is the best. It’s the only thing that will help really, really chapped lips as well as chapped hands.

I draw all the time. And these are some of the most high-quality art pens I’ve used. They come in every color. They’re like the Crayola crayon box but in beautiful paint pens. They have all these different sets, so I have every single color. I’m always using these markers to draw all the patterns for my crochet projects.

I really like the little Lindt dark-chocolate truffles. Those are my favorite. They’re hard to keep around because they go fast. I am also a fan of dark-chocolate Hershey’s with almonds. At the end of every meal, I always want a little something sweet and that always tends to do the trick. They’re also in all of my bags — so sometimes I’ll be sitting outside on set and find this melted pocket of chocolate inside.

I grew up drinking whole milk but then I developed sensitivities and sort of veered away from it. I had almond milk and coconut milk and all the other alt-milks, but then when my daughter was born, milk came back into our house and I started drinking Lactaid. It’s real milk, it just doesn’t have lactose in it. I love the taste of real milk, nothing beats it, especially in cereal or with cookies. You can’t have a glass of cold almond milk with cookies. Lactaid has just been a game changer.
