Since 2018, New York Magazine has been carefully chronicling the rise of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — from her first campaign through her first year in Washington and even her mid-pandemic pivot to streaming on Twitch. On February 22, we’re releasing a new book about the Bronx-born congresswoman. Written by Lisa Miller with an introduction from Rebecca Traister, Take Up Space: The Unprecedented AOC draws on hundreds of interviews exploring her early life, historic election, and career thus far.
The book features an essay by David Wallace-Wells, author of The Uninhabitable Earth, on how Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal would actually impact climate change; the Cut’s Andrea González-Ramírez on AOC’s relationship with Puerto Rico (her mother’s birthplace); and Molly Fischer on how AOC changed the meaning of political authenticity. Illustrated with full-color photos and a graphic essay, Take Up Space also takes deep dives into Ocasio-Cortez’s successful opposition to a new Amazon headquarters in Queens and her role in “the Squad.”
Take Up Space provides a look at the politician from journalists who have been following her career from the beginning. (And, we have to add, the cover portrait by artist Alexis Franklin makes it a not-too-shabby addition to your coffee table.) The book will be available on February 22, but you can preorder it today. And to tide you over, you can read an excerpt.
