Cop Says His ‘Breathe Easy, Don’t Break the Law’ Shirts Totally Have Nothing to Do With Eric Garner

An Indiana police corporal who created and is selling shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Breathe Easy, Don’t Break the Law” swears they have nothing to do with Eric Garner’s famous last words, “I can’t breathe.” God, you guys have such active imaginations.

Jason Barthel is selling the shirts at the uniform shop he owns in Mishawaka, Indiana, but before you jump to any unfair conclusions, let’s hear him out.

Please understand when we use the slogan ‘Breathe Easy’ we are referring to knowing the police are there for you!” he wrote on Facebook. “We are all one people and this is by no means is a slam on Eric Garner or his family, God rest his soul. Lets all band together as AMERICANS regardless of our feelings and know we can and will be better! Thank you for your support.”

Here is a list of other phrases Barthel could’ve used instead of invoking the powerful rallying cry of anti-police-brutality protesters.

  • Relax
  • Calm down
  • Chill out
  • Sit back
  • Loosen up
  • Take it easy
