Tonight, the Yankees Face the Outfield That Could Have Been

It’s not hard to imagine, in an alternate universe where GMs and agents act just a bit more reasonably, Johnny Damon patrolling left field for the Yankees this season (or perhaps becoming the full-time DH, now that Nick Johnson’s suffered his inevitable injury). And it’s also easy to imagine that, if in this alternate universe the Yankees knew Austin Jackson would be leading the American League in batting on May 10, they’d at least have thought twice about pulling off the Curtis Granderson trade, despite Jackson’s 37 strikeouts and an extremely small sample size. But alas, that’s not the universe in which tonight’s Yankees-Tigers game, in which Damon and Jackson will suit up for Detroit, will be played.
