Yankees’ HOPE Week Could Warm Even a Mets/Sox Fan’s Heart

For the second consecutive season, the Yankees are in the midst of HOPE Week, their charitable-outreach initiative. HOPE Week is the brainchild of Yankees media-relations director Jason Zillo, and it involves visiting various unfortunates throughout the community. Last year, the standout was a visit to Camp Sundown — for people who cannot be exposed to UV light — and yesterday Mariano Rivera, Nick Swisher, and other Yankees surprised 13-year-old Jorge Grajales, a quadruple amputee, with a visit to his birthday party. HOPE Week has become one of the more acknowledged and respected charitable-outreach initiatives — a term we’ve used twice, because it sounds like something you’d see on a PowerPoint presentation — in baseball, even getting a shout-out from President Obama earlier this year. It’s a great little thing, and it serves to annoy the rest of baseball that the Yankees are as good at charitable-outreach initiatives as they are at baseball.
