John Skelton Isn’t Doing Much to Keep That Quarterback Controversy Going

Last year, this blog named quarterback John Skelton its official favorite athlete. (Skelton, as you’re probably sick of hearing by now, attended Fordham, Joe’s alma mater, and was drafted by Arizona, Will’s pro team of choice.) And two weeks ago, Skeltonmania reached new heights when, in his second straight start in place of the injured Kevin Kolb, Skelton led the Cardinals on a fourth-quarter drive to beat the Eagles in Philadelphia. If you poked around on the Internet a little, you could even read the words “John Skelton” and “quarterback controversy” in the same article. Things haven’t gone so well the past two weeks, though. Last Sunday, Skelton was benched after throwing three interceptions against San Francisco. And yesterday, Skelton threw for just 114 yards against the Rams, threw two more picks, and, for the second straight week, didn’t connect for any passing touchdowns. (His quarterback rating of 30.0 was the second-worst of his career;  only last week’s was lower.) The good news, at least: Despite Skelton’s struggles, the Cardinals won the game, 23-20. For what it’s worth, since Skelton began starting in place of Kolb, Arizona is 3-1.
