New High Line, New Inflatable Mascots
Celebrate the opening of the second segment of the High Line alongside some friendly blow-up characters created by Miami-based conceptual-art group FriendsWithYou. Through July, Rainbow City, an installation of 40 colorful inflatable sculptures 10 to 40 feet tall, will greet visitors to the elevated parkway, along with a souvenir pop-up shop (W. 30th St. at Tenth Ave.; June 8-July 5).
Islands in the Hudson? No Problem.
What would it look like if we built a chain of islands running through the Hudson or a hydroponics-based agricultural network in Bed-Stuy? Ten design firms show the answers to these fanciful questions and others at “Glimpses of New York and Amsterdam in 2040,” an exhibit on the imagined urban landscape opening at the Center for Architecture this week. The show details sustainable neighborhood models and public-works systems along the rivers and canals flowing through this city and Amsterdam (536 La Guardia Pl., nr. Green Screens Meet Blueprints
Design series “Archi-Film Mashup” returns to East Williamsburg’s 3rd Ward this Saturday, hosting hands-on workshops and discussions with leading local designers on the role of architecture in film. This edition features the design know-how of studios SOFTlab, Bittertang, Underdome, and Volatile Matter, which plan to share their expertise in designing with green screens and various software (195 Morgan Ave., nr.
