Walking west on 17th Street after a delicious dinner at Crema last week, I stopped dead in my tracks in front of a beautiful open space behind a glass storefront. It turned out to be the much-buzzed-about Haven’s Kitchen (109 W. 17th St., nr. Sixth Ave.; havenskitchen.com). Haven’s Kitchen is a new shop, cooking school, and event space rolled into one magnificent duplex in a former carriage house, renovated and designed by owner Alison Schneider (who, by the way, runs the place while also raising five young children). This is the counter on the main floor where you check out the goodies that are freshly baked in the kitchen beyond. Photo: Wendy Goodman

Glass walls open onto the foyer between the storefront and the back kitchen where the classes are held. The risers are marble, and the railing is raw wood, which will age naturally with the many hands gliding over it. Photo: Wendy Goodman

Upstairs, Haven’s Kitchen has just opened its event space. This cozy section of the bar area has a home-away-from-home feel but is available for rent by the event. Photo: Wendy Goodman

The new dining room for Supper Club evenings and private parties was still undergoing finishing touches when I visited. There is a kitchen behind the curtain wall. Photo: Wendy Goodman
