First Look: A Hotelier Plays House

When the Crosby Street Hotel opened in 2010, it quickly gained a reputation for its cozy-modern décor designed by Kit Kemp. Kit along with her husband, Tim, own Firmdale Hotels, which has seven properties in London in addition to its Crosby Street outpost. Kit’s aesthetic has always been delightfully surprising”a mix of art and design”so it was no surprise when she debuted two new rugs and four fabrics for Christopher Farr at the hotel last week. Here is Kit’s signature armchair, upholstered in Bookends, a pattern inspired by a bookcase in one of the hotel rooms. It sits atop her new rug, Egg and Dart. This is Kit’s first commercial line and will be available to the trade at the Holland & Sherry Interiors showroom (979 Third Ave., nr. E. 59th St., Ste. 1402; 212-355-6241). Photo: Wendy Goodman

The new Egg and Dart hand-knotted rug looks great draped over the table in the private dining room at the Crosby Street Hotel. The chairs are upholstered in alternating fabrics; the punchy orange and green prints are called Willow Weave. Photo: Wendy Goodman

The Inside Out pattern comes in four different colors and each one is delicious. This raspberry red is my favorite. Photo: Simon Brown

Willow Weave again, this time in handsome slate blue and leafy green. Photo: Simon Brown
