The city has been buzzing with New York Design Week events. But some of the best showings took place at 52 Mercer Street, in a gallery space occupied by the collective Model Citizens NYC. Seen here, the expansive venue offers a rare glimpse of what Soho lofts used to look like”long before the developers and gentrifiers took over. Raw brick walls and exposed beams provided the ideal setting for Leah Piepgras’s striking bed with “consummation sheets.” In the distance, you can see Daniel Moyer’s traffic-cone orange “Evacuation Equipment Armoire.” Photo: Wendy Goodman

Artists and couple Scott Taylor and Sylvia Heisel created this massive guest book for visitors to sign. They also fashioned a tape installation downstairs that recalled their kitchen, featured in New York Magazine’s spring 2011 Home Design issue on “Extreme Décor.” Photo: Wendy Goodman
