According to the Flesch-Kincaid test, which determines the complexity of a text by measuring sentence length and word length, President Obama’s State of the Union address scored an 8.1, which means it was delivered at the reading-comprehension level of an eighth-grader. That represents the second-lowest score of any orally delivered State of the Union since the mid-thirties.
