The MTA claims that its harebrained scheme to reduce garbage, and therefore rats, in subway stations by getting rid of the trash cans seems to be somehow working. But since the two test stations aren’t a large enough sample, a new crop of eight will be canless starting September 2, including two each in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The plan relies on New Yorkers’ ability to be courteous to those around them, and so the rat takeover is probably imminent.
