In court on Monday former cop Nicholas Mina pleaded guilty to stealing guns from lockers in his East Village precinct and selling them to finance his painkiller addiction. Mina, who was arrested in July, admitted to selling four 9-mm guns taken from coworkers, his own private-use Glock, and a bulletproof vest to drug dealer Ivan Chavez, as well as selling methadone. Mina was caught when Chavez sold department issue guns and ammunition to undercover cops. “It shocks the conscience that the [NYPD] Firearms Investigation Unit under covers had to put their lives in danger in order to spot another officer from putting [police] guns out on the street,” said assistant district attorney Chris Prevost. Mina was facing a twenty year maximum sentence, but is expected to be sentenced to fifteen and a half years in state prison.
