Kevin Jarman was caught shoplifting from a Queens Pathmark when one of the arresting officers allegedly tripped the 50-year-old, resulting in a broken ankle and nine days in the hospital. Today, the New York Post reports, a jury awarded him $510,000 for the injury, his third windfall from the city following two false arrest settlements for $15,000 and $20,000 in 2005 and just last month, respectively. Maybe New York City juries are out of control — the city says it will appeal today’s verdict — or maybe the cops are (probably both), but either way, the real losers are taxpayers, so it doesn’t really matter which way you direct your anger.
