Finally, Snapchat Filters Work on Dogs

Technology can be very scary. Algorithms that move markets and change societies seemingly dictate our every move. They shift the world in milliseconds as processors crunch the numbers and determine the optimal solution. We can never really tame these algorithms, we can only hope to coexist.

On the other hand, they let us put funny filters on our dogs.

Yes, that’s right. You can finally use Snapchat’s filters (or in its parlance, Lenses) on dogs, thanks to an update rolling out this week.

Just incredible. Every step we’ve taken since our progenitors dragged their slimy, wriggling bodies onto land has led to this moment: me putting nerd glasses on my dog. Here she is with hearts floating out of her sweet head, which is too enormous for her little body.

Wow. Truly astounding. Anyway, to get started on an aggravating five minutes of trying to get a dog to look at the camera (“Please, look over here. [Snaps fingers.] Hey! This way! [Clicks tongue a couple times.] Hey! Look!”), just activate Snapchat Lenses like you normally would. That means tapping anywhere on the camera screen. You should know that not every filter works with dogs (yet?) — only the ones with blue paw-print icons on them.

Best of luck to you and your dog. And if history is anything to go by, Instagram should have this feature very soon.
