The Kansas City Chiefs entered Super Bowl 59 attempting to make history as the only team in the NFL’s Super Bowl era to win three consecutive titles.

Instead, by the third quarter Sunday, a far different kind of unprecedented event was unfolding — the Chiefs were on the verge of becoming the first Super Bowl team ever held scoreless.

From the very start, this Super Bowl was controlled by the Philadelphia Eagles, who celebrated under green-and-white confetti inside the Superdome in New Orleans after cruising past Kansas City, 40-22.

It was the second Super Bowl title in Philadelphia’s franchise history, following its championship from the 2017 season.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the game’s most valuable player after throwing for 221 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception, and rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 257 yards, but all three of his touchdown passes came after the Chiefs had already trailed 34-0. Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ most dependable receiving target as Kansas City won three Super Bowls in the last five years, caught four passes for 39 yards.

Saquon Barkley gives his best to New York, former teammates

As he celebrated a Super Bowl win, star Eagles running back Saquon Barkley still had time to shout out his former New York Giants teammates.

Barkley went to Philadelphia as a free agent this past off-season from a bitter rival, and he had nothing but kind words for former co-workers.

"I'm forever grateful for everything that went on in New York," he told the NFL Network. "I got nothing but love for those guys, and hopefully they're super proud of me and seeing me at this moment. But the opportunity came where I had to make decisions for me and my family. My family felt like coming into Philadelphia, I'll be able to expand my legacy."

And that's a wrap on the 2024-25 NFL season

So long, New Orleans. See you (relatively) soon, Santa Clara.

Super Bowl fanatics have a little less than a year to get charged up for the NFL's next championship game, which is set for Feb. 8, 2026, at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

NBC will televise Super Bowl 60 in what will be one of the best sports TV days of the calendar. Eight gold medal events are set for this super Sunday that coincides with Day 2 of the Winter Olympics, which is also carried by NBC.

The 2025 NFL schedule will probably be announced in the middle of May. The 2024 schedule was announced on May 16, year and the 2023 campaign was revealed on May 12.

And while the exact dates of each team's 17 regular-season games are still TBD, the opponents for each squad are set.

Eagles evened the Super Bowl score with Chiefs

Wide receiver A.J. Brown admitted his Eagles were still sore from their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to Kansas City two years ago — and that that pain helped fuel their drive

"We can't rewrite history, but we can make it even, and we damn well sure did tonight," Brown told the NFL Network after Philadelphia's convincing 40-22 win.

Brown made headlines during the playoff season, reading "Inner Excellence" on the bench.

"I didn't need the book today; I had all the 'Inner Excellence' locked in," said a jubilant Brown, who caught a TD pass tonight.

MVP Hurts gives all the credit to Eagles' defense

Hurts, who won Super Bowl MVP, said all the credit for Philadelphia's big win goes to teammates on the defensive side of the ball.

"Defense wins championships; defense wins championships," he told Fox Sports moments after the game. "And they gave us opportunistic, gave us short fields."

The Chiefs scored two garbage time touchdowns to make the final score a deceptively close 40-22. That final score doesn't reflect the Eagles' relentless defense, which totaled six sacks and forced three turnovers.

Jalen Hurts comes out victorious

Hurts, fresh off of a blowout against the Chiefs, commended the team that helped him carry this season over the finish line, saying on the Fox broadcast that "we got a special group this year" and that "we were able to learn from the past," like when the Birds fell to Kansas City in 2023.

He also called out the "nice new pieces to get over the hump," namely running back Barkley, who wasn't the leader of the pack tonight but whose talent throughout the season surely earned the Eagles a spot in the Super Bowl tonight.
