If you’ve ever been to the Kidrobot store in SoHo, you already know that this quirky marketer of what it calls “urban vinyl action figures” gives grown-up boys and girls cover to continue playing with dollies. That’s because its toys are totally weird, oddly endearing little art objects that are increasingly becoming coveted collectibles. (Mike Myers, Christina Aguilera, and Robin Williams are all said to be Kidrobot fans.) In fact, Kidrobot has such serious street cred that Visionaire, the singularly brilliant art/fashion magazine, recently issued a set of 10 limited-edition Kidrobot toys designed by world-famous fashion designers. The two sets of five four-inch dolls—the so-called black set and red set—originally went for $175 each, and are now sold out and highly sought-after on the collector’s market. But next month, those who missed out on the last releases can look forward to two brand-new sets (the “More Toys Yellow” and “More Toys Blue” editions) of Kidrobot/Visionaire designer toys. No word yet on who’s on board this time, but considering the designers who played along last time—including Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Hedi Slimane, Miuccia Prada, and Karl Lagerfeld (whose witty self-portrait toy is shown here)—you can count on some serious star power.
