I cannot resist a book written by a fellow editor, especially when it’s someone who, like Jean Godfrey-June, is a legend in the business. June, for those who don’t recognize the name, is the current beauty director at Lucky and before that was at Elle, and she’s just written a book called Free Gift with Purchase: My Improbable Career in Magazines and Makeup. I have to say, I found it highly entertaining and full of useful information, including insider tips on eyeliner, which creams might actually work, and, of course, industry gossip with victims identities veiled (thinly veiled, for those in the know). All in all, a great read.
