The growing legion of home brewers has a new source for hops at Bitter and Esters, named for the two main flavor components in beer. The 1,000-square-foot storefront, which opened last weekend in Prospect Heights, serves as a supply shop and vocational school for apartment beer makers ($55 for introductory courses, starting July 10), as well as a hands-on work space for groups to create their own ale at one of three Kickstarter-funded electric brewing stations (from $150 for six cases, starting mid-July). Co-owners Douglas Amport and John LaPolla can help you choose from more than 50 varieties, from IPAs to Belgian tripels, and customize spices and hops to taste. And, for kicking back and relishing your brew, a back patio will open in August (700 Washington Ave., nr. St. Marks Ave., Prospect Heights; 917-596-7261).
