Sleep in a 19th-century aristocrat’s neoclassical mansion at the boutique Hotel Del Carmen (from $100/night). Nine color-drenched rooms pay homage to different Mexican surrealist painters; in the Pedro Coronel suite, you’ll find anthropomorphic custom furniture and a bed suspended from the ceiling by ropes, while matryoskha-doll pendant lamps adorn the Vlady room. Check out the lush inner courtyard, called the Patio of the Proverbs, where curiously designed furniture aims to visually illustrate common Mexican sayings (a tabletop finished with cracked sunglasses lenses proves that �what the eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel�).
Keep close to the action at Hotel Demetria (from $130/night), a chic steel-and-glass edifice that’s part art gallery, part condo-hotel, with a great location in stylish Colonia Lafayette. In addition to its sleek suites, decked out with oversized sculptures, floor-to-ceiling windows, and brushed concrete baths in the middle of the room, Demetria boasts a lobby that functions as an exhibition space for emerging Mexican artists. Stay in affordable style at Aloft (from $66/night), which opened its first Guadalajara property last year. Save with a cheerful, modishly decorated standard room or splurge on the �Guau� suite, which comes with a centrally located �exhibition� shower and sweeping city views through its floor-to-ceiling windows. Grab a seat in one of the white pod chairs in the lobby bar to sip a mezcal cocktail ($5) and watch sets by local indie bands during occasional �Live at Aloft� concerts.
