Though they’d exchanged commitment rings in 2004, Nathan formally proposed to Jose the following year during a walk along the East River. Then, a year later, during a vacation in Laguna Beach, a small tragedy occurred: Jose lost his ring. “Nathan threw a pile of sand on me, and the ring fell off. We quarantined the area and combed the beach, to no avail,” Jose says. Ever the magnanimous husband-to-be, Nathan surprised him with a replacement—this time a band with a diamond in it “so I’d be more careful and not lose it,” says Jose. Their wedding was an intimate affair of 80 family members and friends, some of whom flew nineteen hours from Australia, and was held at a friend’s house. Before the ceremony, “we walked out of the house together, hand in hand, wearing matching white Converse low-tops.” Afterward, guests walked along a lantern-lit pathway to the reception area. “My dad kicked off the party by break dancing,” says Jose.
