My book curator, somebody who knows me very well, gifted me this long ago. She’s the kind of person who, when Christmas comes around, will find that one gift that makes you go, “Wow, this is perfect for me.” She knows the bane of my life is being mosquito-bitten because my reaction is way off the charts. I don’t just get a bite and an itchy patch — my eyelids get swollen and I get hot flashes and nothing goes away quickly. This shawl repels mosquitoes. It really, really repels them. It’s very practical, and I feel it kind of goes with everything, which is another reason I like it.
I have the shawls in lots of colors, but the cream one I’m donating was my first — the one my book curator gave me. Anyone can wear it; you can put it around your neck, or you can drape it around your shoulders. Michael [Douglas], my husband, even has one in navy blue. I signed it — I hope you want my signature on it; if not, you may have to cut it off. I’m including a pair of my shoes from my new collection with Butterfly Twists for the winning bidder — I’m going to sign those, too. If someone is willing to pay extra just for my signature, I find that really special.
