Been thinking about upgrading your Roomba or finally investing in a proper clothes steamer? This is definitely the week to do it. Amazon’s annual Prime Day event, which ends tonight, is the perfect time to buy those big-ticket household appliances. Especially if you’ve been letting certain products linger in your cart while waiting for a worthy sale. (On that note, if you’re not a Prime member right now, this week is a pretty good one to sign up for a 30-day trial — more on that here.)
Below, we’ll be gathering deals for the best home appliances worth buying this Prime Day, from robot vacuums to mini-fridges to countertop dishwashers. We ran the numbers to find unusually steep discounts and looked in particular for sales on name-brand household gadgets and gizmos that we’ve written about and recommended before. Among these Strat-approved picks are our favorite vacuum cleaners, a beginner-friendly Singer sewing machine for under $100, and an array of expert-approved air purifiers and humidifiers. You’ll also find reliable fans and air-conditioning units to see out the rest of summer.
Vacuums
Miele’s cordless stick vacuum is great for hard-to-reach spots and ceilings.
“If the WindTunnel is any one thing, it is powerful,” says Strategist managing editor Kelsie Schrader of this Hoover, which is our most-recommended vacuum cleaner for rugs and carpets. “I was thoroughly impressed, if not a little disgusted, at how much dirt it picked up the first time I used it.”
Our favorite vacuum for hardwood floors, this more lightweight Hoover is also nicely discounted.
We’ve heard good things about Black + Decker’s handheld vacuums from several Strategist staffers and two cleaning professionals, all of whom say these tiny but mighty dustbusters can handle pet hair and other apartment debris.
Smart vacuums
Here’s an entry-level Roomba that’ll instantly convert you to the robot-vacuuming way of life. This model will learn your cleaning habits and your voice thanks to Google Assistant and Alexa.
And if you’re already smart vacuuming and looking to explore a wider range of features, we also love this self-emptying one that’s 50 percent off just for Prime Day.
If you don’t trust a robot vacuum to scour your entire floor, this one by Anker features a phone app that allows you to create a handy map of your space and track the Eufy’s progress across it.
This popular mopping robot vacuum does it all, from lifting sticky stains to sucking up pet fur.
Mops
Many reviewers of the Shark Steam Pocket Mop claim it does a better job at lifting dirt and grime than professional cleaning services they’ve used.
Multiple reviewers go so far as to call Bissell’s industrial-looking mop “a beast,” with one writing, “I have white matte tile floors in my kitchen with two 8-year-olds and a dog. They get gross. This thing got it all and leaves no streaks.”
Irons
Advanced ironers will appreciate the 360-degree access offered by this cordless model.
Rowenta’s reliable, German-made irons are beloved by dry cleaners, costume designers, and laundry experts.
Air purifiers and humidifiers
After seven months of owning a Levoit purifier, Camilla Cho, SVP of e-commerce at Vox Media, was able to reduce her allergy-pill intake from once a day to once a month.
We also think Levoit makes some of the best humidifiers out there.
Designed for large rooms, this air purifier is energy efficient yet highly effective at filtering and circulating air.
This powerful purifier looks more like a handsome piece of tech than a bulky appliance.
Even before the pandemic upended our collective ability to sleep through the night, this one-button sound machine was the only thing that helped New York Magazine deputy editor Alexis Swerdloff drift off in an apartment with paper-thin walls.
Fans and air conditioners
As August approaches, it might be worth getting one for each room.
Or if you just can’t stand fan noise, for a little more money we’d recommend this super-silent Dyson dupe.
Patrick McDonnell, assistant manager of Brooklyn’s Mazzone Hardware, told us that he has been using one of these Alexa-compatible fans for ten years.
A highly rated three-mode window AC that can cool a space of up to 350 square feet.
Fridges
We love the look of this retro Frigidaire for a college dorm room.
Or here’s a larger (yet just as charming) option with freezer capacity.
Dishwashers
This sleek little countertop dishwasher saves hours of cleanup and will calm tensions between roommates. Best of all, as our contributing writer Alyse Whitney notes, it requires exactly zero installation.
Shredders
For a crosscut paper shredder with a longer run time and higher paper capacity, we were told by Carl Prouty, the electronics expert at Abt Electronics, Fellowes is the brand to beat.
Sewing machines
A simple sewing machine like this one, from expert-approved brand Singer, is capable of pulling off a variety of fun projects — from pants hemming to making baby blankets and cushion covers.
Small kitchen appliances
This powerful drip machine makes the opposite of diner coffee — and its kitschy colorways are countertop-ready.
SodaStream’s Terra model doesn’t require electricity, freeing up your kitchen outlets for other appliances.
The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape.
